Unto Us A Child Is Born

By Pastor Mitch Horton | December 2004 | Posted in • Archives | (0) Comments

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

“And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. Then Mary said to the Angel, ‘How can this be, since I do not know a man?’ And the angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God’”(Luke 1: 31,34-35).

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His Glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

In a day when the very foundations of our society are being challenged by modern thought seeking to push God out of our culture, we must remember the reason we celebrate Christmas as Christians. While the world’s attention is on commerce, gifts, and decorations, we would do well to pause and remember our need for the Virgin Birth. So why do we need the virgin birth anyway? Why make such a big deal out of it? The Virgin Birth is the very core that makes Christianity THE light in a world of darkness. Without the Virgin Birth, there is no new birth, no redemption from sin, no fellowship with God, no relief from the current condition, and no hope for our future beyond the grave.

The Virgin Birth sets Jesus Christ apart from all humanity. Because His mother Mary was a virgin, and because Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ life was supernatural. Jesus’ Father was God Almighty! Jesus was born without the taint of sin. He was a perfect human being; He was the God-man. Jesus pre-existed His days of earthly life as the second member of the Trinity, the SON. He lived in heaven for eons of time before visiting this planet by incarnating in a human body.

Being born as a perfect human being IN FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD, His blood was literally filled with the life of His Father God. He enjoyed fellowship with God from birth. He was not subject to the nature of sin, to Satan or his cohorts, nor was He subjected to death. His mother Mary gave Him a perfect human body with endless human life; He was immortal from birth. He was not a prisoner of the laws that govern a fallen race. He knew no fear, no anxiety, no sinful desires, no satanic oppression, no sickness, no disease, and no hatred. He was born and lived above the curse that enveloped this earth of ours when the first man Adam sinned.

“The Virgin Birth is the very core that makes Christianity THE light in a world of darkness.”

His life was filled with God thoughts, God desires, God ambitions, and with God’s love for all. His entire reason for coming to this planet incarnated in a human body was so that He could die in our place, and end the bondage we are in as fallen, sinful human beings. “.For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8b). “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Hebrews 2:14-15). Without the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, there is simply no redemption from sin and its catastrophic effects in the lives of us humans. Because the Virgin Birth proves that Jesus is God, He has authority to deal with our sin problem, our devil problem, our sickness problem, and our future judgment and death problem. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the Man, Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). “.I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

Because of the first man’s sin (Adam), all humans born of two natural parents are born INTO sin, OUT of fellowship with God, under subjection to the devil and his cronies (demon spirits and fallen angels), and are subject to death. No human born of two natural parents, a human mother and a human father, can deliver humanity from the bondage of sin because they are bound by sin themselves! All human beings are born without relationship with God, and are under Satan’s dominion! There is no way out of this bondage, except one.

God created us knowing that when He gave us a free will, we could use it against Him and fall into rebellion and sin. He also knew that the only way to solve that problem was to send His only Son, the second member of the Trinity, into a human body to defeat our enemy Satan for us and to pay the penalty decreed upon us because of our sins. And that’s exactly what Jesus Christ did for us.

Being born without an earthly father, His mother Mary simply clothed the pre-existent Christ with a sinless, immortal human body. Jesus was born IN fellowship with God, and OUT from under Satan’s dominion and control. His body was just like Adam’s before he sinned. And because of this, Jesus could face all of our temptations successfully without sinning. He could live as a man in fellowship with God and controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit. He could face our adversary and defeat him with the same weapons that He would give us to use against him.

He would make fellowship with God through the New Birth available to us; He would give us the same access to the Holy Spirit that He had in His earth walk; He would empower us to live free from Satan’s rule over us; He would take the sting out of death for us; He would guarantee us a resurrected body in the future; He would come back and rule the earth until all His enemies were defeated; He would rid the earth of all sin, rebellion, and from the curse placed on it when Adam sinned; and He, as the Virgin-born Son of God, the KING OF ALL KINGS, would present the earth and all its contents, back to God free from the blight of sin. Throughout all eternity, God will show us the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

And it’s all because of the Virgin Birth of Jesus that we celebrate this Christmas season. For God so loved the world that He gave.have a blessed Christmas!
